Eastin’s handling the blog this week.

The creators of Spaceship Long Island have reunited on Long Island over this fun and food-filled weekend for this one. It still took a while to finish, but at least we aren’t going to be up till 3am shading seagulls tonight. And by “we” I mean mostly Ryan.

Over the past few days I bore witness to the laborious inking process of our fancy-pants little comic and let me tell you, it sure looks tedious. As hell. Ryan actually loses his mind during the process. It’s scary. Needless to say, I’m second guessing my asking for a tablet for Christmas. We’ll see.

Anyway, while out to dinner with family and after one too many glasses of red wine from Bravo! Nader–a fantastically delicious restaurant in Huntington, Long Island–we got to debating: What is the best graphic novel of all time? Ryan went with, hands down, The Watchmen. Now, I’ll certainly say it’s one of the best, but I’m just not sure it’s the best. I think I just may be trying to go against the grain on this one, but to be honest, sometimes it was just a little too much, a little too wordy, a little too dense. Now I’m not knocking it – it’s a great read and Moore is, straight up, a genius (and also a madman). But I do think it could have been shaved down a bit in places. Maybe it would be different had I read the individual floppies as they were serialized and not the trade, who knows? Any how, I threw out Miller’s Batman: The Dark Knight Returns. This one had it all for me, action, story, mystery, and even explored the pathology of ole Bats himself, while not bashing the reader over the head with it. Maybe I’m also inclined to Dark Knight Returns because it’s the one that got me back into reading comics (oh! the addiction!), but I also can honestly say that I did not once fall asleep while reading it. Can’t say that for many books or comics I’ve read.

Okay, so I’m now I’m curious: what do you folks out in internet land think? What do you think the best graphic novel of all time is? Or–simply spark up the strife between Ryan and me and decide between Watchmen or Dark Knight Returns.

Oh, and we didn’t forget about the poetry strip. That little treat is still in the works. Look for it soon!
